Luís Tiago Magalhães is currently Director of Bioinformatics at G42, one of the largest genomics companies in the world. At G42, Tiago leads an important team of bioinformaticians in the execution of the Emirati Genome Project, the largest population genomics project in the world.
Words that describe his daily work: scientific thinking, development of new products based on biomedical innovation, large-scale genomics (Illumina, MGI, ONT), analytics, computational biology, drug discovery, human resources supervision, business strategy, communication. He has a PhD in Neurodevelopment/Bioinformatics from UCBerkeley/University of Coimbra and was one of the members of the Gulbenkian Foundation’s PGDBM PhD program. He also has an EMBA in scientific infrastructure management from Bicocca University, Milan, Italy.
Prior to his current position, he was VP of Bioinformatics at Genomics Medicine Ireland, and Executive Director of CCMAR, Portugal, one of the most important marine biology centers in the world. As a scientist he has worked and published on autism, diabetes, cancer, and ancestry analysis.
Other aspects of his CV include technology transfer and innovation, and he believes that science is most powerful when applied to solving social challenges. He was the founder and CEO of a personalized medicine project, Genomics Portugal. He is currently a reviewer for several scientific journals and the European Union. He has worked/studied in Portugal, UAE, Germany, US, Canada, Timor-Leste, Ireland and Brazil.
Tiago Magalhães has been a member of the Portuguese Diaspora Council since April 2024.
