João Cunha is responsible for managing the company’s global operations, encompassing everything from development, construction supervision, asset management, and energy marketing to supporting strategic planning and investments (M&A). Before joining Smartenergy in January 2018, João worked in the M&A team at Lightsource BP, where he was responsible for acquiring secondary market solar projects in the UK in partnership with Blackrock and also led the company’s entry into the Dutch and Italian markets, totaling around 250 MWp. Prior to that, he led Martifer Solar UK, a subsidiary of Martifer Solar Group (one of Europe’s leading EPCs), from its inception to becoming one of the top five solar players in the UK, with over 200 MWp deployed across licensing/development, EPC, and O&M. João holds a degree in Economics from Universidade Católica Portuguesa and an MBA from IESIDE Business Institute | Georgetown University.

João Cunha has been a member of the Portuguese Diaspora Council since June 2024.
